US cardiologist Stephen Gundry equated tomatoes with poisons because of the dangerous lectin proteins they contain. Such a conclusion of a specialist, as Elle notes, is contained in his book The Plant Paradox (“Plant Paradox”).
According to the doctor, tomatoes can cause weight gain, inflammation and serious allergic reactions. “But the worst thing is that the lectin attacks our cells, and, alas, the only way to deal with this protein is to refuse it,” — said the cardiologist.
Citing research data, Gundry pointed out that people who followed a strict lectin-free diet for three months showed no signs of inflammation—despite the fact that 800 out of 1,000 participants had a family history of autoimmune disease.
Also, according to the cardiologist, lectins can increase dementia, anemia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and also negatively affect the development of acne and baldness.
The main amount of lectin is found in the skin of a tomato, so if you are not ready to give up your favorite vegetable, you need to remove the peel from it and not eat it raw.
Another record holder for the content of dangerous protein is corn.
