German Foreign Minister Annalena Burbock is convinced that Russia’s hypothetical disconnection from the SWIFT international payment system will be the strongest response in the event of a Russian attack on Ukraine. The minister expressed this opinion in an interview with the Sueddeutsche Zeitung.
“The Chancellor (Olaf Scholz – ed.) and I made it clear that any means and measures are being discussed in case of further military escalation. And this applies to the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline,” UNIAN quoted the German Foreign Minister as saying.
At the same time, speaking about SWIFT, she agreed that this response would be the strongest in the event of Russian aggression, although, the minister believes, not the most effective.
Recall that back in November-December last year, the world media was filled with the topic of the alleged Russian invasion of Ukraine and the sanctions that should follow. According to the authors and experts of these publications, a sign of “invasion” is the concentration of Russian military equipment in the regions bordering Ukraine. Among the likely sanctions are both the shutdown of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, as well as restrictions against Russian energy companies, and the shutdown of the international system of “fast” financial settlements SWIFT.
On January 20, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned that Russia’s disconnection from the SWIFT payment system could provoke a civil war in Ukraine.
We also note that earlier Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany Olaf Scholz confirmed that the German government does not plan to supply weapons to Ukraine, but will try diplomatically to prevent the possibility of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Meanwhile, the head of the German Navy, Vice Admiral Kai-Achim Schönbach, has warned that the next continental war may be in the next few decades. He also doubted that Crimea, which was annexed to Russia in 2014 following a referendum, would return to Ukraine.
