The Institute for Economics and Peace (Sydney, Australia) has published the Global Peace Index for 2021. The rating includes 163 countries.

Iceland is recognized as the most peaceful. It is followed by Denmark and New Zealand. Also in the top ten are Norway, Austria, Slovenia and Japan.

The least peaceful countries last year were Afghanistan, Somalia and Iraq.

Russia in the list is in the “red” (that is, not a peaceful zone) and occupies 156th place at the very end of the list. The USA is in 117th place, Ukraine is in 112th.

Recall that the Global Peace Index was developed by sociologists and economists from the international group of peace experts of the Peace Institute together with the Center for Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Sydney, characterizing, in their opinion, the level of security of living in countries and regions.

This index was first calculated in May 2007. The index was said to be the first attempt to rank countries around the world in terms of safe living. The index takes into account both internal factors – for example, the level of violence in the country and crime, and external – the country’s international relations, military spending and other parameters.
