Ukraine’s accession to NATO will not be on the alliance’s agenda for a long time to come, says Bavarian Prime Minister and leader of the Christian Social Union Markus Söder.

In an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, he said that the West, “with all the fair criticism” of Moscow, still has to answer the main question: will NATO accept Ukraine?

“Russia cannot be allowed to dictate the rules, but the answer to this question must be given,” Zeder said. And he added: in his opinion, there will be no eastward expansion of NATO at the expense of Ukraine for “a long time.” And NATO is not a threat, he concluded, although the issue of expanding the alliance is no doubt a concern for Russia.

We will remind, earlier US President Joe Biden said: it is unlikely that in the near future Ukraine will become a member of NATO. Biden stressed that NATO has “a number of international agreements on the possible accession of other countries,” but the likelihood of Ukraine joining the alliance is still small. According to him, first Kiev needs to “do a lot of work on democracy.” At the same time, the US authorities “may think” about refusing to deploy strategic weapons in Ukraine.
