NATO rejected Moscow’s demands for the withdrawal of alliance troops from Bulgaria and Romania. This is reported by the American media with reference to the representative of the alliance, Oana Lungescu.
According to Interfax, Lungescu said that “NATO will not give up … the presence of troops in the eastern part of the alliance” and “the ability to defend.” According to her, the fulfillment of the requirements of the Russian Federation will create “the first and second class of NATO members.” And the alliance “cannot allow” this. “We reject any ideas about spheres of influence in Europe,” Lungescu said.
She also added that NATO will always respond to any deterioration in the security sphere by “strengthening collective defense”, and will also continue to assess the need to strengthen the eastern part.
Recall that earlier today the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry called on Russia to respect Sofia’s foreign policy choice regarding the country’s membership in NATO.
Prior to this, the Russian Foreign Ministry was told that Russian proposals for security guarantees imply the withdrawal of NATO forces from Bulgaria and Romania, which joined the alliance after 1997.
