Another initiative on sanctions against Russia and its leadership, including President Vladimir Putin, has been submitted to the US Congress. The author of the document is the head of the international committee of the US House of Representatives, Democrat Gregory Meeks, RIA Novosti reports with reference to the press service of the committee.

The bill talks about “further punishment of the economy” of the Russian Federation and “other consequences” in the event of “Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.” Meeks is proposing the bill in parallel with an initiative earlier introduced by fellow Democrat Robert Menendez.

The Mix Law includes sanctions against Nord Stream 2, the Russian extractive industry, at least three financial institutions, public debt, the President of the Russian Federation and other senior officials. It was also proposed to provide defense assistance to Ukraine in an accelerated mode.

Recall, on the eve of the President of the European Commission, Ursula Fund der Leyen, said that if Russia takes further aggressive actions on the territory of Ukraine, massive economic and financial sanctions will follow in response, which will deal a powerful blow to the Russian economy. According to von der Leyen, the EU countries are ready to act in the event of an escalation on the Russian-Ukrainian border.

In November-December last year, the world media was filled with the topic of the alleged Russian invasion of Ukraine and the sanctions that should follow. According to the authors and experts of these publications, a sign of “invasion” is the concentration of Russian military equipment in the regions bordering Ukraine. Among the likely sanctions are both the shutdown of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, as well as restrictions against Russian energy companies, and the shutdown of the SWIFT system of “fast” financial settlements. The Kremlin has repeatedly stated that the Ukrainian people are a fraternal people for the Russians, who are being “stupid” by their own authorities. They also noted that Kiev’s desire to join NATO cannot but disturb Moscow, since in this case the infrastructure of the alliance will come close to the Russian borders.
