For crimes against wild flora and fauna, Ángel M. was sentenced to three years in prison. The incident happened in Sucúa where a spider monkey (Ateles belzebuth) was found chained to a metal column, a species that is in the “endangered” category according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Through a statement, the Prosecutor’s Office explained that the owner of the property mentioned that he acquired the specimen in a local Shuar community. The event occurred on November 30 of last year and personnel from the National Police and the Ministry of the Environment, Water and Ecological Transition attended the site.

The animal was transferred to the “Uñushi” Wildlife Passage Center for its respective care. The Ministry indicated that he was taken into custody last December at the Amaru Zoological Biopark in Cuenca.

It was indicated that an expert witness concluded that the animal was removed from its habitat at an early age and had lost much of the natural behavior of its species and could hardly survive without human care.

Within the sentence, the person involved must publish a radio message about the prohibition of owning wild animals as well as an economic sanction. (I)
