OCCRP: Nursultan Nazarbayev controls billions in assets

The first president of Kazakhstan and the former head of the Security Council of the republic, Nursultan Nazarbayev, controls assets worth at least $ 8 billion, including banks in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia, TV channels, hotels, shopping centers, factories, warehouses, a private jet worth over $ 100 million and other objects.

This is reported by the authors of a study conducted by the association of investigative journalists OCCRP together with the Kazakhstani publications Kloop and Vlast.

Formally, these assets do not belong to the ex-president himself, but to the charitable foundations he founded – the Nazarbayev Foundation, the Nursultan Nazarbayev Foundation, the Demeu Foundation and the Elbasy Foundation, but in practice they continue to remain under the control of Nursultan Nazarbaev.

The name of Nursultan Nazarbayev and his relatives, who have been removed from high positions, has been on the pages of the world and Kazakhstani media throughout January 2022, starting from the beginning of mass protests in Kazakhstan. Nazarbayev himself temporarily disappeared from the sight of fellow citizens, which led to various assumptions about his fate and whereabouts, until it became known that he was alive and was “on a well-deserved rest.”
