Former US Ambassador to Russia Mike McFaul is convinced that not NATO’s eastward expansion, but Ukraine itself, is a threat to the regime of Russian President Vladimir Putin. He expressed this opinion on his Twitter account.

“Today’s Ukrainian democracy, and not Ukraine’s NATO membership in the distant future, poses a real threat to Putin,” the ex-ambassador believes.

Earlier, in an article for The Washington Post, he listed the conditions that Russia must fulfill in order for the West to begin security negotiations with it, demanding, in particular, that Russia return Crimea to Ukraine and remove Iskanders from the Kaliningrad region.

We also recall that in November-December last year, the world media was filled with the topic of the alleged Russian invasion of Ukraine and the sanctions that should follow. According to the authors and experts of these publications, a sign of “invasion” is the concentration of Russian military equipment in the regions bordering Ukraine. Among the likely sanctions are both the shutdown of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, as well as restrictions against Russian energy companies, and the shutdown of the SWIFT system of “fast” financial settlements.
