Around 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 18, vehicular traffic was enabled on the Alóag – Unión del Toachi road, confirmed the Pichincha Prefecture. The road remained blocked for several hours, due to a group of heavy transporters who complained about the poor conditions of the asphalt.

The carriers parked their trucks around the toll at kilometer 56, blocking the passage of other vehicles. The union demanded that the road be maintained, since it represents a danger, and rejected the possibility of activating the collection at the 56 km toll, without first intervening on the road and completing the extension of the road. highway.

Through social networks, images and videos of the drivers in the sector were shared.

Prefecture proposes five alternatives

After the carriers unblocked the pass, the Prefecture of Pichincha issued a statement on the situation of the Alóag – Unión del Toachi road.

The document indicates that “with the aim of achieving a definitive exit that finances the expansion and maintenance”, since September 2021 the Prefecture has sent the Ministry of Transport and Public Works five proposals to be analyzed.

However, the institution assures that it has not yet received a response from the State Portfolio.

On the protests of the transporters, the Prefecture expressed its “understanding before the discomfort that generates in the users not having a road in adequate conditions to travel.”

In addition, he indicated that the Ministry has been insisted on the installation of a technical commission to proceed with the termination by mutual agreement for the administration of the road.

On Tuesday morning, the prefect Paola Pavón detailed in an interview in sonorama radio that one of the five proposals put forward is that the prefecture would have no problem transferring to the Ministry of Transportation the powers of the Alóag – Unión del Toachi road, if the State Portfolio so desires.

The other four alternatives consist of increasing the collection of the toll, in order to have resources for the maintenance and expansion of the highway.

“We had proposed several options, from $1.50 to $2, with previous (road) interventions. We first need the track to be in perfect condition. The toll is a fee, it has to be charged for a good service and, obviously, after the placement of the tolls. These proposals oscillate in the times of implementation of these tolls. We are waiting for a response from the Ministry of Public Works,” said Pavón. (I)
