Holy water can be drunk not only on an empty stomach, this is a prejudice. Hieromonk Macarius (Markish), the chairman of the department for church relations with society and the media of the Ivanovo-Voznesensk diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), told RIA Novosti that there are no rules on how to use water blessed on the feast of Epiphany.
“Some foolish people limit the use of holy water, believing that it needs some special honor. There is a prejudice that holy water should be drunk on an empty stomach. Nothing like this. Holy water is the means of sanctifying the whole world. When to drink it and to whom to drink – according to the situation, when you want, then drink, this water is for you. Jesus Christ comes into this world for us, he does not need anything from us, God is self-sufficient,” explained the hieromonk.
He noted that in matters relating to holy water, faith and superstition converge. “God helps those who come to him for help, and those who ask for help with one hand and push away with the other, I doubt that he will help. For people who think that they can grab some material object and extract something from it, this is pure magic. And people feel a little sorry. Do you go to church for worship, do you participate in the sacraments of the church? If not, then there is reason to think. Isn’t it easier to get water from the tap? – said the hieromonk.
