The White House admitted that Russia would still be disconnected from the SWIFT system as part of a new package of sanctions. Washington is still considering this option. This was stated by White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki during a press conference. The broadcast is in Twitter.
Asked by a reporter whether the US has abandoned the idea of sanctions against Moscow to cut off SWIFT, she said: “No option has been dropped.” Psaki added that the United States is now continuing consultations with European partners on retaliatory measures in the event of Russian aggression against Ukraine.
Earlier, the Handelsblatt newspaper reported that Europe and the United States changed their minds about disconnecting Russia from SWIFT and thereby cutting it off from global financial flows. Instead, the new sanctions are preparing large economic fines against the largest Russian banks.
Washington then said that they still do not rule out a shutdown. The Kremlin, in turn, urged not to believe the rumors about sanctions against Russian banks.
