KazTAG: The number of detainees in Alma-Ata against the backdrop of riots has reached 2.7 thousand people

The number of detainees as a result of riots in Alma-Ata exceeded 2.7 thousand people. This was reported by the Kazakh Telegraph Agency with reference to the commandant’s office of the city.

“In total, since the beginning of the anti-terrorist operation, 2,748 participants in illegal actions, looting and other crimes have been detained. In total, 131 firearms and 4,179 ammunition were seized,” the report says.

Protests in Kazakhstan began after the New Year because of the increase in prices for liquefied gas. They were accompanied by riots and clashes with the police. A state of emergency was introduced on the territory of the country, the government was dismissed. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev turned to his CSTO partners for help. Collective peacekeeping forces were sent to the republic, which are now returning from Kazakhstan.

Ilyas Userov, deputy mayor of Alma-Ata, reported that the preliminary amount of damage from the riots in Alma-Ata is estimated at $260 million (112.6 billion tenge).
