Municipalities are open to measures against COVID-19, but ask that they be adapted to their reality and in consensus

According to the Ministry of Public Health, the second week of January has registered the highest number of infections since the pandemic began in Ecuador in 2020.

The Association of Ecuadorian Municipalities (AME) was open to adopting measures that stop the spread of COVID-19 in the country, but according to each reality.

This organization, which brings together 221 municipalities, He held a virtual meeting this Monday – in which not all the mayors were present – with government authorities, including the president of the national Emergency Operations Committee (COE), Juan Zapata, and the Ministers of Health, Ximena Garzón, and of Education, María Brown.

According to a statement from the AME, Garzón referred to the accelerated increase in infections, surpassing 40,000 in the second week of January, while Brown talked about the suspension of school activities during this week.

Franklin Galarza, president of the AME, pointed out that each measure must be agreed with the mayors and according to the reality in each territory. He was open to adopting the necessary measures to counteract the wave of infections. He also supported the vaccination process against the coronavirus.

The willingness to keep classes virtually, in the municipal educational institutions, between January 17 and 21, was welcomed by the Municipality of Quito.

Despite not being part of the AME, but of the provincial governments, the Pichincha Prefecture announced that it was suspending face-to-face activities in its central building and in the zonal units from January 17 to 21, with exception of citizen services, such as health centers.
