With a baby on the waiting list to enter an intensive care unit (ICU) and nearly 1,100 positive cases of COVID-19, the health week began in the province of Azuay.

For the authorities, the infection rate is “striking” and has had an impact on the increasing daily occupancy of beds in hospitals and clinics.

In the latest report issued by the zonal coordinator 6 of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), Andrea Bersosa, the arrival of patients infected with coronavirus increases daily; but according to statistical data, there are still beds available.

In the Vicente Corral Moscoso hospital, managed by the MSP, the occupancy of the intensive care unit (ICU) is 80%, while in the clinic it is 63%. In the José Carrasco Arteaga hospital, belonging to the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security (IESS), the hospitalization area is occupied by 83% and the ICU by 83%.

While in the private sector, according to the official, the ICU average is 33%, with the exception of the River Hospital, which is completely full.

“What is worrying is that we are in the final phase of expanding beds, which means reducing care for other pathologies,” he said.

From $15 to $300 is the cost at home if a family member is infected with not so aggressive variants of COVID-19

When comparing the contagion curve since the start of the pandemic (March 2020) with the current date, the coordinator reported that the increase is 300%, going from 700 to 2,000 infections in the space of a week.

But from his perspective, the health system has not collapsed due to vaccination.

The doctor and researcher Bernardo Vega keeps weekly statistics on the progress of the virus since the start of the pandemic. The morning of this Monday detailed that between January 10 and 16 an average of 148 positives per day was registered, which represents an acceleration of 788 cases in relation to last week.

Vega recommended that citizens avoid meetings and wear a double mask. (I)
