The ten richest people in the world have become twice as rich during the pandemic. This is evidenced by the calculations of the non-profit organization Oxfam, which deals with the problems of poverty and inequality in different countries.

Thus, according to the report, the combined wealth of the ten leaders in the list of the richest people in the world has grown from $700 billion to $1.5 trillion since the spring of 2020.

Experts point out that this growth has become more significant than in the last 14 years before the pandemic. The starting point is linked to the previous global economic crisis of 2008-2009.

Oxfam notes that while the super-rich have benefited from the pandemic, another 163 million people have fallen below the poverty line. The organization predicts that by 2030, 3.3 billion people will live on less than $5.5 a day.

Oxfam management believes that such an increase in the wealth of billionaires exposes the fundamental weaknesses of the economy. The current generation of leaders, the organization believes, can begin to make amends by imposing progressive taxes on capital and using those proceeds to save lives and invest in the future of humanity.

Oxfam called the situation “economic violence”.
