The Second Court of Cassation of General Jurisdiction dismissed the appeal against the sentence of members of the New Greatness community, who had previously been found guilty of extremism.

Svetlana Sidorkina, a lawyer for one of the convicted, told TASS that the defense asked the court to cancel the verdict, terminate the criminal proceedings, or send the materials for a new trial. The prosecutor’s office insisted on the legality of the verdict.

As a result, the court rejected the cassation appeal against the verdict against Ruslan Kostylenkov, Vyacheslav Kryukov, Pyotr Karamzin, Anna Pavlikova, Maria Dubovik, Dmitry Poletaev and Maxim Roshchin.

According to investigators, members of the community intended to seize power in Russia through a coup d’état. The defendants themselves claim that the idea of creating an extremist organization was suggested to them by infiltrated police and FSB officers.

In court, Kostylenkov received seven years in prison, Kryukov – six years in prison, Karamzin – 6.5 years in prison, Pavlikova – four years on probation, Dubovik – six years on probation, Poletaev received six years on probation, Maxim Roshchin – 6.5 years on probation. Later, the Moscow City Court reduced the sentences of Kostylenkov, Karamzin and Roshchin by three months.
