Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba is convinced that Russia “took a dangerous new course of escalation” last fall, and in this regard, Kiev is working with partners and allies to implement a comprehensive “deterrence package” for Moscow. He stated this in an interview with Bild newspaper.
The plan includes three levels: “strong de-escalation diplomacy”, development of “painful economic sanctions”, deepening defense cooperation with Ukraine, RBC reports.
“We have redoubled our efforts to mobilize international support for Ukraine. Among other things, we are working closely with our allies and partners to implement a comprehensive containment package,” RIA Novosti quoted the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry as saying.
At the same time, he pointed out that the decision on Ukraine’s entry into NATO remains solely with the country itself and the member states of the alliance.
Meanwhile, The Wall Street Journal notes that some members of the North Atlantic Alliance were dissatisfied with the ideas put forward by American diplomats in recent negotiations with Russian colleagues – NATO allies did not like the discussion of mutual steps to reconcile the West and Russia without taking into account the views of European states.
Recall also that back in November-December last year, the world media was filled with the topic of the alleged Russian invasion of Ukraine and the sanctions that should follow. According to the authors and experts of these publications, a sign of “invasion” is the concentration of Russian military equipment in the regions bordering Ukraine. Among the likely sanctions are both the shutdown of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, as well as restrictions against Russian energy companies, and the shutdown of the SWIFT system of “fast” financial settlements.
