The head of the COE said that there is already a waiting list for patients in IESS hospitals. In Guayas there are 21 infected waiting and in Manabí, 10.
COVID-19 cases set a new record in Ecuador. The contagion forecasts that were being considered for this week fell short.
The president of the Emergency Operations Committee (COE), Juan Zapata, gave a new figure this Sunday: Ecuador has already exceeded 42,000 cases this week, a new record.
Zapata recalled that last Thursday, the cases of COVID-19 did not reach 20,000.
“The country is epidemiologically at a red light,” Zapata said, referring to the fact that 193 cantons are at a red light.
During these first weeks of January, the country has experienced a rapid increase in cases associated with the contagious omicron variant.
The head of the COE said that there is already a waiting list for patients in IESS hospitals. In Guayas there are 21 infected waiting and in Manabí, 10.
The Ministry of Health acknowledged that the hospital system is feeling pressure.
But the figures given this Sunday seem not to yield. The Government expects that cases will continue to increase this week.
Education Minister Maria Brown asked families to limit non-essential activities next week.
The ministry suspended face-to-face classes in 193 cantons of the country next week.
Zapata requested that the cantonal COE meet immediately and make decisions in their territories. (I)
