Russia can no longer put up with a NATO invasion of Ukraine, this is a “red line” and a real threat to the security of Europe. This was stated by the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov in an interview with CNN, excerpts from which are quoted by RIA Novosti.
According to Peskov, Moscow is now witnessing a “gradual NATO invasion” of Ukrainian territory: infrastructure is being built there, military instructors are working, stockpiles of weapons are being created. Russia will no longer tolerate all this.
Therefore, Peskov noted, Russia will keep the army near the border with Ukraine: this is a precautionary measure and a reaction to tension in the region. Peskov added that NATO is not a dove of peace and prosperity, but a weapon of confrontation that is moving closer to Russian borders every day.
Peskov also recalled that during the unification of Germany in the late 1980s, the United States promised not to expand NATO infrastructure to the east. But this promise was not recorded in a legally binding form.
As for the recent Russia-NATO consultations, Peskov pointed out that Moscow insists on receiving a direct answer to its proposals for security guarantees.
Recall, on January 10, Russia and the United States held a new round of dialogue on strategic stability in Geneva. It was followed by a meeting of the Russia-NATO Council in Brussels. It was followed on Thursday, January 13, by consultations at the Vienna site of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. The main focus of these discussions was the security proposals that the Russian side presented to the US and NATO at the end of last year against the background of the escalation of the crisis in Ukraine.
