With the review of people, vehicles and motorcycles, the operations began on Friday night in various parts of Esmeraldas, in an attempt to stop the crime wave that the city supports and that led to a citizen march this week to demand measures.
Police officers from the Order Maintenance Unit (UMO) and the Armed Forces apply the Esmeraldas Rescue Plan. The units were activated after the visit made on Friday by the Minister of Government, Alexandra Vela, and the Commander General of the Police, Tannya Varela.
The Esmeralda capital reports crimes of robbery of people, commercial establishments, attempted murder and extortion, which have alarmed merchants and business owners.
The drivers were taken by surprise to see men dressed in black with the UMO identification at the roadblocks, as happened to Heriberto Saltos when he arrived at the La Tolita 2 citadel sector, south of the city, around 7:00 p.m. last night.
Councilman Miguel Ruiz even had his traumatic weapon that he carried in his vehicle, in the review operation by the Center for Prisoners of Liberty No. 2 Esmeraldas, early this Saturday the 15th.
The joint operation with personnel from the Marine Corps and the Bimot-13 Land Force Battalion also participate in the control of weapons and explosives
“Faced with so much insecurity, it is no longer possible to carry traumatic or sports weapons that help somewhat in the face of what we are experiencing. Please, National Police, Armed Forces, Government of Esmeraldas, do not allow the people to do their own justice,” Saltos wrote on a social network.

While these actions are being carried out, in front of the Atacames Prosecutor’s Office, in the south of Esmeraldas, two subjects, one with a firearm, stole the motorcycle from a home delivery man. The event was recorded by a video surveillance camera.
Agents of the public company Esvial EP last night retained several motorcycles without license plates and notified their drivers for not wearing a protective helmet.
Fabián Recalde, a social activist and participant in the march for security on Wednesday, considered that the creation of the provincial citizen security committee and the proposals presented to the authorities are necessary. The march called for new UPCs, equipment for the police, and polygraph tests for the uniformed officers.
The operations also extended to San Lorenzo del Pailón, the northern border of Esmeraldas, where two people were shot to death in Mataje and La Magdalena. (I)
