If Finland and Sweden want to join NATO, they will be accepted literally the next day after the request is submitted. This statement was made by ex-NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen on the air of the Finnish broadcasting company Yle. According to him, the alliance “will make a decision instantly” if Helsinki and Stockholm decide to join NATO.

As for Russia, which in recent talks with NATO on security guarantees demanded a veto on the expansion of the alliance, Rasmussen repeated what NATO representatives had said earlier: “Our doors will remain open.” And he added: NATO does not want Russian President Vladimir Putin to “act as a doorman.” Rasmussen also believes that a “Russian invasion” of Ukraine could intensify NATO aspirations for Finland and Sweden. Although Russia will not attack Ukraine, he added.

Recall that earlier White House press secretary Jen Psaki said that, according to the United States, Russia could launch an invasion of Ukraine between the current dates and mid-February and expressed concern that “the Russian government is preparing an invasion.”
