A tsunami threat has been declared on the Kuril Islands after an underwater volcano erupted near the Tonga Islands.
As RIA Novosti was told in the emergency services of the islands, the tsunami center of the FBGU Sakhalin UGMS, until 21:00 on January 15, announced a warning about a possible approach of a tsunami wave with a height of no more than 0.2 meters.
There is no threat to the population and the territory. Alerts have already been carried out for two ports in the Yuzhno-Kurilsky and Kurilsky urban districts.
We will remind, earlier it was reported that the tsunami caused by the eruption of the underwater volcano Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Haapai in the Pacific Ocean hit the coast of Japan. The massive eruption was accompanied by shockwaves that swept across the South Pacific and hit the Polynesian island nation of Tonga. In addition to Japan, tsunamis can threaten Fiji, New Zealand and Australia. The eight-minute eruption was so powerful that sounds like thunder could be heard even in Fiji – more than 800 kilometers from the volcano.
