Director of the Institute of International Affairs Mika Aaltola does not attach much importance to the words of US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, who, in response to a journalist’s question, said that Finland wants to join NATO.

According to Aaltol, Finland is a strong and stable state, and, naturally, people are interested in it. The expert emphasized that this was a short answer in the morning program, so instead of analyzing such signals that come in every day, you should consider the full picture of what is happening.

“Of course, the US and NATO are interested in Finland in terms of a more even distribution of collective defense. But Finland also has its own interests. It makes no sense for us to adapt to other people’s interests, be it Russia or NATO. Russia represented by Finland can lose a lot, and they understand this. NATO has a lot to gain from Finland, and they understand that too. Therefore, all such signals should be viewed through this prism. But most importantly, one should concentrate on the role of Finland itself in the struggle for its own destiny,” Aaltola said, Yle reports.

Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto refuted Blinken’s words yesterday, saying that Finland is not taking any action to join NATO, but retains the right to apply for membership in the alliance.
