The omicron strain of coronavirus is much more contagious, but with its advent, mortality has significantly decreased. This was stated on the air of Radio Russia by George Washington University professor, virologist Konstantin Chumakov.

“The disease is now proceeding in a rather mild form, mortality has decreased significantly. While before about 2% of the sick died, now it is somewhere around 0.1%, ”Chumakov said. He explained that “omicron”, unlike previous variations, does not progress to pneumonia, RIA Novosti reports.

He also noticed that the new strain began to affect young people more, and in them the disease proceeds much more easily than in the elderly.

In the same interview, Chumakov said that most of the inhabitants of the planet would have to get sick with a coronavirus infection, but there is a chance that this wave will be the last. He recalled the Spanish flu, noting that there were no flu shots then, and millions of people were ill. As a result, population immunity was formed, and the Spanish flu degenerated into a regular flu.

“Now, due to the fact that Omicron has entered the scene, maybe this is just the chance that this will end quickly,” Chumakov said.

He noticed that the course of the disease “omicron” is similar to the usual SARS without loss of smell.
