The head of state was called to appear on the Pandora Papers, once the National Assembly decided to entrust the Constitutional Guarantees Commission, chaired by José Cabascango (Pachakutik), with an investigation regarding the information published in the press about the leak. of files on registration and administration of companies and trusts in tax havens, where the President of the Republic, Guillermo Lasso, is mentioned.
According to the schedule of appearances defined by the Guarantee Commission, for this October 20, starting at 09:00, María de Lourdes Alcívar and Santiago Xavier Lasso, wife and son of the president, are invited.
This call is given in the midst of questions about the legislative competence to do so, since they are not public officials. And that same argument, by which they are not obliged to attend that invitation, in accordance with articles 120 of the Constitution and 75 of the Organic Law of the Legislative Function, were communicated by the wife and son of the president to the president of the legislative table. .

However, they reported that although the invitation made was “non-delegable”, they are willing to have their lawyer, Eduardo Carmigniani Valencia, appear on their behalf before the Commission if they deem it pertinent, for which any day of the next week, and that they will receive any future communication to the lawyer’s email.

The members of the Commission requested information on the Pandora Papers from both EL UNIVERSO newspaper and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).
The director of Diario EL UNIVERSO, Carlos Pérez Barriga, sent a letter to the president of the Constitutional Guarantees Commission where he clarifies that he has not participated in the aforementioned journalistic investigation, led by the International Consortium of Journalists; Consequently, the only information available is that already published in Diario EL UNIVERSO, in its edition of October 4, 2021, page 4, which is also available to the public on the portal www.eluniverso.com.
