Since January 2021, a vaccination plan against COVID-19 has been carried out in Ecuador. It began in the government of then President Lenín Moreno.
In Ecuador there is more than 19,000 cases confirmed cases of COVID-19, in a single week.
This was held by the Minister of Health, Ximena Garzón, in the forum “Vaccination COVID-19: lessons learned and challenges for the future”, organized by the International University of La Rioja (UNIR).
In Ecuador, from January 2021, a vaccination plan against COVID-19 is implemented. It began in the government of Lenín Moreno and has continued in the administration of Guillermo Lasso.
He explained that from first week of december, the presence of the omicron variant in the country.
However, the official maintained that there is a big difference due to vaccination.
“Now with this new regrowth, in which we have many more cases, we have more cases even that at the beginning of the pandemic, only the fatality rate (death rate) has reached 1.6 deaths per 1,000 confirmed cases in week one of this year”, he said, via internet, in his speech at the event .
This figure, according to the Ministry of Health, is lower than that recorded in april 2021 when there were 43 deaths for the same number of confirmed diagnoses.
In Ecuador, the inoculation process started almost a year ago
During Moreno’s administration, they presented several drawbacks such as the anticipation of vaccinating public figures and the low arrival of drugs. Lasso managed to get more supply of medicines and fulfilled the campaign promise of vaccinating 9 million people in the first hundred days of work.
Currently, even the third dose of the vaccine. This phase began in October 2021 with health personnel, continued with older adults and those with immunosuppression, and has gradually been extended to more of the population.
Guillermo Lasso: We have fulfilled, nine million vaccinated in a hundred days, it is a merit of all Ecuadorians
With respect to virus Positivity, Garzón pointed out that it is located in a 47 %, after applying PCR detection tests.
The official added that at the beginning of the vaccination plan they estimated that at least 85% of the vaccinable population, that is, from the age of 5 to be able to reach what they considered collective immunity at that time, but with ómicron there are other calculations, which he did not detail. He mentioned, in any case, that there is enough to vaccinate all Ecuadorians.
About the hospitalized people, Garzón explained that they are people who are 50 years old and older, especially men, with aggravating diseases, comorbidities and incomplete vaccination schedules.
The next step for the Government is to include in the immunization process children between three and four years of age, which will be in February, according to government announcements. (I)
