Finland has no plans to join NATO yet. This, as reported by Reuters, said the head of the Finnish Foreign Ministry Pekka Haavisto.
According to him, Helsinki has no plans to change course in international politics. “Finnish security policy remains unchanged,” he stressed, adding that Finland has no project to join NATO.
“Finland is not discussing the possibility of joining NATO with Brussels, moreover, it does not have such a project,” Haavisto stressed.
Commenting on the Polish foreign minister’s warning that Europe is closer to war than at any time in the past 30 years, the minister said he understands the pressure Ukraine and Poland are under due to heightened security tensions on their borders. “But I hope we are not in that situation,” Haavisto said.
Recall that the day before, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that if Finland and Sweden apply, they can become NATO members very quickly. According to him, Helsinki and Stockholm are important partners of the alliance and conduct joint exercises with it. In addition, both countries largely meet the standards of the organization in the field of defense and security.
In turn, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov called the possible entry of Finland and Sweden into NATO a threat. According to him, any expansion of the alliance worries Moscow, since it is “an element of confrontation.”
