The Swedish Armed Forces began patrolling the streets of Visby, the main city of the island of Gotland. The reason is the increased risks in relations between Russia and NATO, Novosti Sweden reports.
The Swedish Armed Forces characterize their actions as a “contingency adjustment”.
“From today we will have constant patrols on the streets of Visby and in other places… The airport and seaports are of great importance for Gotland. And it is important to show both the Gotlanders and our opponents that we are ready for active defense, and we can adapt to the situation, ”commented Tumas Engshammar, communications manager for the Gotland P18 regiment.
However, in general, the Swedish military assesses the risk of a Russian attack as low.
The island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea, according to the Swedish authorities, is a tasty morsel for the Russian military. Since 1679, Gotland has always belonged to Sweden, except for a few weeks during the Russo-Swedish War of 1808–1809, when it was occupied by Russian troops and declared a Russian province.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Thursday that if Finland and Sweden apply, they could become NATO members very quickly.
