A number of Russian proposals on security guarantees are unacceptable to the US. This was announced by Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman at a briefing.
According to her, during the last meeting of the delegations of Russia and NATO, it became clear that some of Russia’s proposals are simply unrealistic. “We are not going to talk about Ukraine without Ukraine, about Europe without Europe, about NATO without NATO and about the OSCE without the OSCE,” Sherman said.
She stressed that the United States would not agree to a ban on NATO expansion. “We will not agree to return to the situation of 1997,” she said and added that the US and NATO allies “will not slam the doors” of the organization for those wishing to join the alliance. At the same time, Sherman acknowledged that Georgia and Ukraine have a lot of work to do before they meet NATO standards.
She also doubted that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline would be put into operation in the event of a further escalation of the situation on the borders of Ukraine.
It should be noted that the RF-NATO talks lasted about four hours. The meeting became the second stage of consultations between Russia and Western countries on Russian proposals for European security. The first stage – negotiations between the Russian Federation and the United States were held in Geneva on January 10, the third stage within the framework of the OSCE will be held in Vienna on January 13.
