Moscow residents warned about “ice needles”

On Thursday morning, residents of Moscow can observe diamond dust or, as meteorologists call this phenomenon, “ice needles.” As reported by RIA Novosti, the leading employee of the Phobos weather center, Yevgeny Tishkovets, announced this.

“In conditions of abnormal cold and high humidity, intense freezing of water vapor will begin and in the morning the smallest ice crystals, called ice needles or diamond dust in meteorology, can float in the air,” he said.

Tishkovets added that the strongest frosts since the beginning of the year will hit Moscow next night.

Earlier, Tishkovets said that the largest snowdrifts since the Battle of Moscow are expected in Moscow. He said that by the end of the working week, the snow storm will intensify again, and the snowdrifts will reach a record half-meter height – this is almost twice the norm. The last time this time of the year Moscow was snowed so much 80 years ago – in January 1942, when the snow-gauge rulers sank to a depth of 49 cm.On Friday the air temperature will be about zero, gusts of wind will reach stormy 15-20 meters per second.
