Shooting between criminal groups left dead and injured in Quevedo

About 12 armed men clashed outside a nightlife center. Then a van with weapons that would have been used in the shooting was found.

Two deaths and three wounded were reported in the Quevedo canton, in Los Ríos, after the shooting that took place on the night of Tuesday, January 11, 2022. The detonations alerted the inhabitants of the Juan Montalvo sector, of the urban parish Venus de Rio, so some decided to hide and take shelter, while others recorded the event that resulted in material damage to homes and city streets.

The fatalities were identified as Rafael Lenin Culijan Quimis, 30, and Luis Banchen Arboleda, 44, both with criminal records. Two men and a woman were also injured in the shooting.

Preliminary data from the Police indicate that the violent confrontation was between two criminal organizations that are trying to take over the territory to sell drugs.

The Police at the moment have not provided further details. Rafael Culijan, brother of one of the deceased, said that the whole family was in his home when several subjects arrived outside of a nightlife center in the sector in a white van and began to shoot at everyone present.

The amateur recorded videos remained as evidence of the shooting. In one of them, about 12 armed individuals are observed shooting at each other. Some of them carried rifles. More than 50 ballistic evidence was raised at the scene.

“My brother was a collateral victim, we want this fact to be investigated because nothing else can remain like that. There are deaths and we do not want this to happen again, “said the relative of Rafeal Culijan, who, according to police data, records a history of the crime of murder.

The videos recorded by several citizens of that town remained as evidence of the shooting, in some of them groups of men with firearms in their hands, several of them type rifles, were observed attacking each other, just like a war.

The fear of the inhabitants of the Venus parish has caused some to abandon their homes in order to protect the integrity of their families, since it is not the first time that a violent event of this nature has been recorded.

Around 10:00 p.m. on that same Tuesday, a section of kilometer 11 of the Quevedo – Santo Domingo highway was blocked by elements of the National Police for 45 minutes due to a persecution.

According to the officers’ report, a van was still abandoned by its occupants.

Inside the car, the uniformed men found firearms, which are presumed to have been used in the shooting that occurred in the Venus del Río parish. For this fact, a person is detained for the respective investigations. (I)
