The rise in food prices in Russia may lead to the need to introduce food ration cards for low-income Russians in the country. Ruslan Grinberg, economist and scientific director of the Institute of Economics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told RIA Novosti about this.
According to him, “if their (consumer prices – ed.) Growth continues or accelerates, the government will either have to start subsidizing the production of the most important products, or it will be necessary to introduce food ration cards in Russia.”
However, Greenberg advises not to be afraid of the introduction of food ration cards, since for many countries this is a common practice. “In many countries, including the United States, they exist, there are millions on them, and nothing. We just have a slightly different attitude towards them. In the minds of Russians, a food card is a shame, ”the expert explained.
As Lenta.ru reminds, the introduction of food ration cards in Russia has been discussed by officials since the end of the 2000s. So, in particular, the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation proposed in 2014 to create a system of additional food for low-income citizens – to credit funds to special cards, which can only buy food of certain positions.
Meanwhile, in October last year, in an interview with Rosbalt, economist Yevgeny Gontmakher suggested that the Russian authorities are avoiding the introduction of food ration cards because of fears of associations with the shortage of the early 1990s, and therefore, he believes, it is easier to distribute social assistance for 10 thousand rubles. …
