“It came as a surprise to everyone”: Peskov considers the investigation of the riots in Kazakhstan to be the case of Nur-Sultan

The protests and unrest in Kazakhstan came as a surprise to all countries of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), including Russia. Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov told reporters today.

“It came as a surprise to everyone. If I am not mistaken, this came as a surprise both for the Kazakh side and for the CSTO. And for the Russian Federation it came as a surprise, “RIA Novosti quotes Peskov.

Let us remind you that after the New Year, protests began in Kazakhstan – the protesters demanded a reduction in the price of liquefied gas. Later, the actions of discontent escalated into riots and clashes with law enforcement officers, there are dead and wounded. Against this background, the government of Kazakhstan resigned, and a state of emergency was declared throughout the country. The President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, requested assistance from the CSTO. More than 5.1 thousand people were detained, according to official data.

At the same time, the press secretary pointed out, the Kremlin believes that it is Nur-Sultan’s case, not Moscow’s, to name the specific forces behind the events in Kazakhstan, as well as to investigate the causes and circumstances of the incident.

At the same time, Peskov assured that Putin was in constant contact with Tokayev in connection with what was happening in Kazakhstan.
