The Ministry of Public Health (MSP) confirmed this Sunday to the provincial Emergency Operations Committee (COE) the first case of the omicron variant of COVID-19 in El Oro, according to a statement from the governorate of this jurisdiction.
It was detailed that it is a 28-year-old male patient, a native and resident of Machala. The Health portfolio reported that last Friday it was diagnosed as positive from the tests that were collected by local laboratories.
Currently the patient is in home isolation and his health condition is stable, it was indicated. The MSP did not reveal more data on how it was infected and it is not known how many people are under epidemiological surveillance.
The relaxation of the population in the midst of a contagious omicron is linked to the accelerated increase in COVID-19 cases in Ecuador
The provincial COE in the next few hours prepares a health report on COVID-19 cases in the province of El Oro. This weekend the figures reached 50% of positive cases from the antigen tests that Salud carried out in Machala.
On December 14, the first case of this variant was identified in Quito. It was a 48-year-old engineer who left the country in mid-November to conduct research on the African continent.
Three days later it was confirmed the second case in Guayaquil, unrelated to the first.
Government authorities have mentioned that the transmission of this variant, which is more rapidly contagious, is already transmitted by the community. (I)
