The forces of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in Kazakhstan will be deployed locally. This was stated by the country’s Secretary of State Yerlan Karin in his Telegram channel.
According to him, the peacekeeping contingent will not be used in all regions. Peacekeepers will provide security for vital facilities on the ground, Karin explained. He also added that this was a reasonable measure, as Kazakhstan faced a carefully planned and sudden attack by radicals across the country.
The Secretary of State stressed that the CSTO mission is peacekeeping and is of short duration. He noted that with the stabilization of the situation, the entire peacekeeping contingent will be withdrawn from Kazakhstan.
Earlier, Karin said that the involvement of the CSTO forces helped to preserve the state integrity of Kazakhstan. He noted that the country was in a very critical situation, “the count went on for minutes, hours.” According to him, the involvement of a peacekeeping contingent ruined all plans for destabilization.
On January 5, it became known about the decision of the Kazakh authorities to involve the CSTO peacekeepers to suppress the unrest in the republic. The first board with Russian troops arrived in Alma-Ata on January 6. A contingent from Belarus and Armenia was also sent to the republic. As the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev specified, the peacekeeping forces of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) will stay in the country until the situation in the country stabilizes.
