Until last January 2, it had 33% of its population vaccinated.
The remoteness of most of the more than 30 communities that Montecristi has with the center of this historic canton would be one of the reasons why several inhabitants still do not apply the doses of vaccines against COVID-19.
So at least Dr. Alfredo Villacís maintains that hypothesis, who is the vice-mayor of this canton, and who indicates that despite this factor that causes hundreds of Montecristenses not yet to be vaccinated, the immunization process continues in health centers and even in the facilities of the 23 de Octubre school, the place where the greatest application of vaccines has been registered in this canton.
According to an analysis carried out by this newspaper, Montecristi is one of the 18 cantons in the country where less than half of its population has the complete scheme for the application of vaccines against COVID-19. Until January 2, it had 33% of its population vaccinated, one of the lowest on the Coast.
“This is due to the perimeter of Montecristi, which is quite wide and it is rather the inhabitants of the communities who find it difficult to come to Montecristi,” said Villacís.
More than half a million vaccines against COVID-19 applied between Manta, Montecristi and Jaramijó
During the beginning of the pandemic, between the months of June and September 2020, mass deaths were known precisely in communes such as La Sequita, Pepa de Huso, Bajos del Pechiche and de la Palma, Prison, among others, where it was known of the estimated death of more than 150 people in these Montecristense communities, although the authorities do not have official data on the deaths in this canton due to the pandemic.
A few days ago, several cases of COVID-19 were detected in the La Pila parish, a town located on the way to the south of Manabí, and which is an obligatory step to travel to and from the Guayas province.
Villacís confirmed that personnel from the Ministry of Public Health arrived at the aforementioned parish to take nasopharyngeal swab samples, the results of which will have to be given by the authorities of that State portfolio, although the doctor and Montecristi authority already foresees what the results indicate. of those samples.
“Clinically, the symptoms that patients present are omicron, but as it is not so aggressive, the patient recovers in a few days,” said Villacís. (I)
