Andrés Rosas, judge of the Judicial Unit for Family, Women, Children and Adolescents of the Latacunga canton, ordered institutional foster care in the Jardín del Edén foundation (Salcedo canton), as a protection measure in favor of Luis (protected name), a child 10-year-old, physically assaulted by someone close to his family environment, in the province of Cotopaxi.

The purpose is to ensure the integrity of the child, while it is resolved to integrate him into his extended family, explained the public defender, Amanda Gálvez, in charge of the process.

The alert regarding the minor’s situation occurred at the Toacaso parish school that he attends, when his teacher discovered the physical assault to which he was subjected.
The boy reported that on Tuesday, January 4, 2022, Rosa E., his stepfather’s aunt, burned his hands with a burning piece of wood, causing serious injuries.
This would not be the first assault he endured, since it was known that there is a process in the prosecution, for an alleged crime against the sexual integrity of the child.
Due to this fact, the psychologist from the educational institution would have sought to interview the child’s mother on more than one occasion; however, the mother frequently changed her address.

Due to these circumstances, the minor’s teacher requested the help of the National Police who managed to rescue him and take him to the General Hospital of Latacunga, for a medical evaluation, due to the serious injuries caused.
He was subsequently placed in the custody of the National Directorate of Specialized Police for Children and Adolescents (Dinapen) until his legal situation is resolved.
The Public Defender’s Office prioritizes the care of children and adolescents. From January to December 2021, in this line of service, 52,470 consultancies and 88,502 sponsorships were attended nationwide. (I)
