CNN: US fears anti-Russian sanctions will boomerang at them – Rosbalt

“Negative consequences” of sanctions against Russia could “boomerang hit the United States.” This opinion, as reported by the CNN television company, specialists from the US Department of State and the US Treasury.

The American departments believe that “the toughest sanctions against Russia” can also “harm economies around the world, causing a jump in gas prices and disrupting trade and investment (ties) between Europe and Russia,” TASS quotes.

According to sources, restrictive measures may affect the Russian banking and energy sectors, Russia’s access to debt trading. It is allowed, according to media reports, to disconnect Russia from the international interbank system for transferring information and making SWIFT payments and tightening export controls.

The leaders of the 27 EU countries at the summit in Brussels unanimously decided to extend the economic sectoral sanctions against Russia for six months. European sanctions against the Russian Federation were introduced after the annexation of Crimea to Russia in 2014. In the same year, Russia introduced counter-sanctions, banning the import of a number of food products from Europe.

Prior to this, Peskov stated that “it is impossible to impose any restrictions against Russia and not to experience suffering yourself.”

The possible disconnection of Russia from SWIFT began to be discussed back in 2014, after the first wave of US and EU sanctions against Russia. The shutdown scenario was also considered in connection with the sanctions over the poisoning accusations of the former GRU officer Sergei Skripal.

The Russian authorities wanted to protect banks from possible problems in the event of a SWIFT disconnection, and since December 2014, the Central Bank of the Russian Federation has provided credit institutions with a new service for transferring financial messages in SWIFT formats for domestic transactions – the Financial Message Transfer System (FMS).

The SWIFT system is an international community for transferring information and making payments.
