COVID-19 cases of the last two epidemiological weeks increased at a higher rate in Ecuador

Only between December 19 and 25, 5,803 are preliminarily reported, according to available official figures.

The number of new cases of COVID-19 registered in the country in the last two epidemiological weeks of 2021 has been increasing compared to the first two weeks of last December and even in relation to the last five months.

The confirmed cases, taking into account the date of onset of symptoms, between last December 19 and 25 is provisionally located at 5,803, on average a contagion would have occurred every 1 minute and 44 seconds, although it could be that in the days most Close to the Christmas holiday, that average time could have been less, if the number of confirmed cases was higher on those days than at the beginning of that 51st epidemiological week.

Between December 26 and January 1, the partial number of infected so far reaches 3,936, although there would be dozens of pending samples to determine their result and also people who have not yet accessed a test for COVID-19; While between December 5 and 11 of this year, 3,020 cases were reached and between 12 and 18 of that same month the figure reached 3,606 infections.

It should be remembered that there is a great difference in the reports that the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) prepares each day regarding the coronavirus, and that is that there are three types of case counting: 1) confirmed cases based on the date of onset of symptoms of each infected (it would be the closest to the real record of how the pandemic evolves); 2) confirmed cases based on the date of medical care for each patient in one of the health centers of the public and complementary networks; and 3) confirmed cases based on the date of notification of the test result for COVID-19 (whether it has been taken in public or private laboratories) and, therefore, entered into the Integrated Epidemiological Surveillance System.

Hospital occupancy due to COVID-19 is on the rise in Ecuador’s provinces and several adjust measures

What was registered throughout the month of last December and especially in the last two weeks regarding the incidence of cases was not seen since epidemiological week number 30 (July 25 to 31, 2021, with 3,972 infections).

In that month of July 2021, a total of 19,275 confirmed cases of COVID-19 were reached (daily average of 688) and in December it reached 16,365, with dozens of samples pending to determine their result. (I)
