The manager does not rule out that if there is a greater demand, other services are suspended to attend only to infected people.
Although of the ten beds in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Ambato General Teaching Hospital (HGDA) enabled for patients with COVID, only two are occupied and of the 60 in hospitalization are with nine used, the manager of the house of health, Andrés Jaramillo, does not rule out that if there is a greater demand, other services such as external consultation are suspended to attend only to infected people.
He argued that with the omicron variant they would be forced to reengineer the service areas, and depending on the number of infected in the following days, it will be necessary to make changes to have more space and provide care.
Even depending on the number of infected, there is a provision that only COVID patients could be treated, while continuing to attend to emergency cases, as has been done throughout the pandemic.
The prognoses are not so good due to the increase in infections, but the hospital manager said that it is hoped that the situation continues as before in order to continue treating both COVID patients and those with other pathologies.
Jaramillo commented that due to the concurrence of many people with symptoms, it was necessary to enable spaces for respiratory triage with a team of three doctors, who only on Wednesday attended more than 100 people. Vaccines, he emphasized, have had their positive effect because most do not require hospitalization.
The Ambato General Teaching Hospital has 20 ICU beds, 50% for COVID patients and the other half for other diseases, but if necessary, everything could be used for those infected by the coronavirus and can be expanded to a maximum of 23 beds; while in isolation and hospitalization there are up to 150 spaces.
Jaramillo made a call for citizen co-responsibility to abide by biosafety protocols in order to avoid contagion.
From the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security (IESS) Ambato it was reported that in epidemiological week 1 of 2022 there were 338 people treated with symptoms, but that in the ICU there were no patients with this disease, while in hospitalization there were six admitted.
In Cuenca, the health authorities of the city recognize that in recent days there has been a “rebound in cases” of COVID-19, which is evidenced in the expansion of spaces in the hospitals of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) and of the IESS.
The official report determines that 200 positive cases are being generated daily, based on the massive application of tests.
Until noon on Thursday, the Intensive Care Units (ICU) for COVID cases had a high demand for patients. In the Vicente Corral Moscoso, administered by the MSP, it was 85% in the ICU and 73% in the outpatient clinic, according to the MSP zonal coordinator 6, Andrea Bersosa.
From the first site they went from six to nine spaces. While at the José Carrasco Arteaga, of the IESS, until noon the epidemiologist Jorge Torres confirmed that they were treating 22 COVID patients, of which seven were in the ICU, which means 70% of their capacity in intensive care.
Another 50 patients received outpatient care, but there is the possibility of expanding it based on the evolution of the virus and depending on the possible cases that occur after the New Year’s holiday. (I)
