About 500 people seek care for COVID symptoms daily at the IESS Quito Sur hospital

At the lowest point of the pandemic, in September 2021, there were 15 hospitalized patients.

At the IESS Quito Sur hospital, which is located in the El Recreo sector, in the south of the city, the number of people seeking care for presenting respiratory symptoms has doubled between December 2021 and January 2022.

Juan Sánchez, medical technical director of the Quito Sur hospital, indicated that this health home has been designated as a sentinel for the reception of COVID patients.

He recalled that, at the lowest point of the pandemic, in September 2021, there were 15 hospitalized patients and about 60 to 65 patients arriving each day with respiratory symptoms.

This figure, he added, has been gradually increasing in recent weeks to the point that, at the end of December last year, there was “worrying” data showing an increase in cases as well as infections.

Symptoms of the omicron variant of coronavirus would be similar to a common flu, health experts say

“For the week of December 26, we had an average of 250 patients a day who reached respiratory triage; for this week, an average of 500 patients who arrive daily at the respiratory triage tent to be treated ”, he said.

However, Sánchez indicated that most of those who come to be treated have mild symptoms. (I)
