CSTO sends peacekeepers to Kazakhstan

The CSTO Collective Security Council decided to send collective peacekeeping forces to Kazakhstan. Chairman of the Council, Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan announced this on Facebook.

“In connection with the appeal of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan K.-Zh.K. Tokayev and in view of the threat to national security and the sovereignty of the Republic of Kazakhstan caused, inter alia, by outside interference, the CSTO Collective Security Council, in accordance with Article 4 of the Collective Security Treaty, adopted a decision to send the Collective Peacekeeping Forces of the CSTO to the Republic of Kazakhstan for a limited period of time in order to stabilize and normalize the situation in this country, ”the message says.

The CSTO includes Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan.

We add that all banks have been suspended in Kazakhstan. This, as reported by “Interfax”, said the official representative of the National Bank of the Republic Olzhas Ramazanov.

On the eve, the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev, requested assistance from the CSTO because of the protests that began in the country after the New Year. The protesters demanded a reduction in the price of liquefied gas. The government of Kazakhstan has resigned. A state of emergency is in force throughout the country. During the riots, eight police officers and military personnel of the National Guard were killed, 317 were injured.
