Three Kings Day: Why is it celebrated on January 6?

This January 6 the Epiphany of the Lord is celebrated.

After the celebration of the birth of Jesus, Catholicism gets ready to live another religious festival. It is about Three Kings Day where the time is remembered when the so-called Magi worshiped the Child Jesus days after his birth.

Precisely on this day the epiphany of the Lord is given.

When is the Three Kings Day celebrated?

The appearance of the Magi occurs in the Bible, exactly in the Gospel according to Matthew 2, 1-12, where it is related that King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, was concerned about the appearance of magi from East who asked where the King of the Jews was born.

After consulting the place of birth to the pontiffs and scribes, he told the magi to report it and advise him to also worship it.

“They entered the house and saw the child with Mary his mother. They knelt down and worshiped him. They opened his treasures and offered him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Then, having been warned in dreams not to return to Herod, they returned to their country by another way, “he says in the Gospel.

While the Bible does not specify how many wise men there were, an estimate was made due to the number of gifts mentioned that he received (gold, frankincense, and myrrh). The names of Melchior, Gaspar and Baltasar first appeared on the famous 6th century mosaic in the Basilica of Saint Apollinare the New in the Italian city of Ravenna.

This celebration occurs thirteen days after the birth of Jesus.

In several countries this day different traditions are carried out, for example, there is the commercialization of the rosca de Reyes (bread in a circular shape with fruits or nuts), in others this day gifts are opened while in other regions the retreat is made of birth. (I)
