In Los Ríos, infections and the demand for care due to complications related to COVID-19 increase

Citizen indiscipline was evident on the holiday. Authorities removed more than 4,000 libadores from the streets.

Quevedo, Los Ríos

Despite the 2,000 control operations at the provincial level during the last holiday of last year, it was difficult for the competent authorities and public forces to control capacity, biosecurity measures and the withdrawal of more than 4,000 libadores from the streets.

Precisely, as of Monday, January 3, the health centers of the province, especially Quevedo, are saturated.

Most, according to the report of the Emergency Operations Committee (COE), present some suspicious symptoms related to COVID-19 and its variants, such as delta and omicron.

The governor of Los Ríos, Génesis Blum, indicated that, according to the report of the directors of the Babahoyo and Quevedo hospitals, in December there were 2,167 people treated with respiratory symptoms in the respiratory triage areas, of which 489 gave positive for COVID-19. Of this number, 156 cases required hospitalization and 24 died.

“During the holiday there was widespread disrespect for biosecurity measures and unfortunately in the coming days we will see the results in hospitals,” said Blum, who recommended the use of the appropriate mask and that social distancing be practiced to avoid more infections.

Lorena Rojas, president of the COE of Quevedo, said that the report of the Mesa 2 de Salud reported four positive cases of omicron in the city and that these patients are under observation.

Rojas also mentioned that the control of capacity in commerce and tolerance and entertainment centers is still 50%, and that as COE they will carry out a campaign to encourage citizens to protect themselves and not hold family gatherings, as well as to prioritize their outputs and that these are of extreme need.

Vaccination points

Lisseth Beltrán, district director of Health 12D03, made up of the Mocache, Valencia, Quevedo and Buena Fe cantons, said that this Wednesday, January 5, new vaccination points will be enabled in order to continue immunizing more people.

The official explained that in Quevedo the sports center of the State Technical University of Quevedo (UTEQ) and the Shopping Center will be enabled as vaccination points, while in Mocache there will be a space in the educational unit that bears the same name; in Buena Fe, at the Quintiliano Sánchez educational unit; and in the canton of Valencia, in the educational unit Víctor Manuel Rendón.

Vaccines are also available in health centers in these cities and are applied from 08:30 to 16:00, explained Beltrán.

“There is a slight increase in COVID-19 cases, it is not alarming, but we must execute actions together with the competent authorities to stop the infections,” said the Director of Health.

As of December 19, 2021, the province had 13,561 cases confirmed by PCR test. Of these, 4,045 were counted in Babahoyo and 2,798 in Quevedo.

Meanwhile, on January 2, Los Ríos reached 13,893 cases; of those, Babahoyo registered 4,104 and Quevedo 2,897. (I)
