China and Germany will be connected by a new land-sea cargo route through St. Petersburg

New services for the transportation of goods by rail and sea transport between the city of Xi’an (Shaanxi province, Northwest China) and the city of Mannheim in Germany, Xinhua reported.

At midnight on January 1, a train departed from Xi’an International Port Station carrying 50 containers of electronics and goods for cross-border e-commerce, marking the opening of a new cargo route, the agency notes. Its length is about 12.8 thousand km, travel time is 16-18 days.

After arriving in St. Petersburg, the containers will be delivered to the port of Mukran in Germany by ship, and then loaded onto a train and sent to their final destination – Mannheim.

Xiaojun, CEO of Xi’an Free Trade Port Construction and Operations Company, said the new route avoids disruptions in transportation caused by over-congestion at several stations on traditional routes through Eastern Europe.
