Trial hearing is installed against Abdalá Bucaram for alleged crime of arms trafficking

Case was opened for a weapon found at the home of a former president in June 2020.

On the morning of this Tuesday the 4th, in the North 2 Criminal Judicial Unit, located in Albán Borja, the trial hearing was set up against former President Abdalá Bucaram Ortiz for the alleged crime of trafficking and possession of weapons.

This case was opened after the discovery of a firearm and ammunition at Bucaram’s home, located in the Kennedy Norte citadel, in Guayaquil.

Those items were found during a raid deployed on June 3, 2020 by the Task Force of the State Attorney General’s Office to collect information on the sale of medical supplies with an alleged surcharge in public hospitals.

The former president faces another trial for organized crime in Quito.

Four other people, including his son Jacobo, are prosecuted in that case in which the alleged negotiation of rapid tests for the diagnosis of COVID-19 between March and June 2020 is investigated.

In July of last year, a judge ruled that Abdalá Bucaram Ortiz was dismissed for the alleged crime of trafficking in cultural heritage assets. This case was due to the archaeological pieces found in the same raid in June 2020. (I)
