Quito registered 1,261 crowds in the last holiday, more than triple compared to the previous year

Security authorities released the official figures for the New Year’s holiday.

On the afternoon of this Monday, January 3, representatives of several security institutions delivered the balance left by the New Year’s holiday in Quito. The press conference was held in the ECU911 building.

Daniela Valarezo, Secretary of Security, reported that 17 operations were carried out on the Christmas holiday and 21 on New Years, solely by said entity.

Valarezo pointed out that there was a decrease in incidents of citizen coexistence, compared to the holiday of the previous year. From December 27, 2020 to January 2, 2020, 4,640 incidents were registered and in the same period this year there were 4,581. However, he stressed that there was an increase in crowds, in the previous year there were 416 and on this occasion reported 1,261.

The areas with the highest number of agglomerations were Eloy Alfaro, in the south of Quito, and Eugenio Espejo, in the La Mariscal sector.

According to the Secretary of Security, the balance of these holidays was positive thanks to the control deployed with the different institutions.

Jaime Villacreses, supervisor of the Metropolitan Control Agency (AMC), reported that they have issued 68 acts of sanctioning administrative initiation and seven closings. Among these operations, he reiterated, a shopping center and a movie theater located in the north of the capital disrespected capacity allowed for which they started the sanctioning process of five unified basic salaries, that is, a $ 2,000 fine.

He also noted that they have delivered to the Armed Forces 4,429 fireworks units for their destruction.

Esteban Cárdenas, commander of the Quito Firefighters Corps, said that on the New Year’s holiday they attended 292 emergencies, of these 217 were by the ambulance system. Also reported four wildfires, two vehicular fires, 18 emergencies due to the use of domestic gas and water heaters and a flood.

“There was a 47% increase in emergencies in relation to the previous year, producing 202 people injured, 57 due to traffic accidents, 124 medical emergencies and 21 due to civil violence “added Cárdenas.

For her part, Cecilia Vivanco, chief of operations of the Metropolitan Transit Agency, announced that from December 23 to 26, 2021 they issued 281 subpoenas and 27 people were apprehended.

What’s more, from December 30 to January 2 they registered 405 citations, 22 drivers were apprehended and 65 vehicles were detained by the AMT agents.

In this last holiday they reported 39 claims, 16 people were injured and 5 died.

December operations of the National Police

Cesar Zapata, commander of Zone 9 (DMQ) of the National Police, reported that in the last month of December there was a 20% decrease in violent deaths, compared to the previous year. In 2020 there were fifteen deaths, this year there were twelve.

Zapata pointed out that crimes that increased in December were car and motorcycle theft. However, he stressed that at a general level they reported a 29% decrease in crimes, that is, 530 events less than in 2020.

They also reported that throughout the month, they removed 64,067 people from sucking in public spaces. In addition, they retained 33 motorcycles and recovered 35. The reported vehicles retained are 16 and 31 recovered.

As a result of the deployed operations, 501 people were arrested for different crimes, mostly theft from people and vehicle accessories.

They also reported the following:

  • Confiscation of 44 firearms.
  • Dismantling of five criminal organizations.
  • 1,693 seized knives (this is the weapon with which most crimes and robberies are committed in the DMQ, according to the National Police).
  • Confiscation of 1,886 liters of artisanal alcohol
  • 2,546 fireworks seized.

Zapata made a comparison between 2020 and 2021 in which he highlighted that there was a 2% decrease in violent deaths. In 2020 there were 144 and in this year 141.

In all of 2021 they report 382 motorcycles retained and 322 recovered, 233 vehicles retained and 237 recovered and reported as stolen. 6,458 people were arrested for committing different crimes, 339 firearms were seized and 49 criminal organizations were dismantled. 14,693 edged weapons seized, all this, only in the DMQ.

In Pichincha, 359 locals and 14 public events participated. He also reported that they seized 185 liters of artisanal liquor, 124 cigarette packs and 2,546 fireworks.
