Delta and omicron variants predominate in the latest SARS-CoV-2 samples sequenced from Ecuador on the Gisaid portal

The Ministry of Health indicated that there are 68 cases of omicron that have been identified in the country.

An increase in cases of COVID-19 with the omicron variant announced the Ministry of Health. Through a statement the entity announced that in the country they have identified 68 cases in six provinces.

As of December 27, 24 infections had been reported, however, 44 more have been discovered. These are mainly found in provinces such as Guayas and Pichincha with 33 and 30 cases, respectively.

Another of the provinces that appears in the registry is Tungurahua with two cases; Napo, Cotopaxi and Chimborazo each have one case.

The Ministry indicated that the positive cases for the variant and suspects are in an epidemiological fence and under medical surveillance.

Ómicron is one of the four variants that the World Health Organization (WHO) has classified as of concern. The organization classifies the SARS-CoV-2 variants as of concern and of interest. The first group, made up of five variants, corresponds to variants that have any of these three characteristics: increased transmissibility, virulence, or decreased efficacy of vaccines and treatments.

In the variants of interest, consisting of mu and lambda, they must have characteristics that indicate that they may pose a new risk to global public health.

According to the international portal Gisaid, where the different sequenced genomes are entered, Ecuador has entered 29 sequences of the omicron variant in the last four weeks. This database is used by various institutions that graph the prevalence of the variants.

Since July, the delta variant has become predominant in Ecuador, however, in recent days it has been displaced by the recent omicron. The University of Bern, through its website covariants.org, and the Regeneron portal record that between November 29 and December 13 these were the variants that were identified in the country:

Delta: 90 samples (97%)

Omicron: 3 samples (3%)

In Guayaquil, an ‘accelerated’ increase in COVID-19 infections is reported since last week, according to local COE

Between December 13 and 27 These were the variants that were found among 55 samples:

Delta: 28 cases (51%)

Omicron: 26 cases (47%)

Mu: 1 case (2%)

The Ministry of Health indicated that there has been an increase in infections due to the crowds in the last weeks of the year.

It should be remembered that not all positive samples are sequenced in the country, so it cannot be ruled out that there are cases in other provinces or that more are circulating in Ecuador. (I)
