Transit of Russian gas through Ukraine to Slovakia fell by 41.7%

The transit of Russian gas through Ukraine towards Slovakia fell on January 1, 2022 to a two-month low. This is reported by Reuters with reference to the data of the Slovak gas transmission operator Eustream.

Pumping through the Velke Kapusany border crossing decreased from 84 to 49 million cubic meters (41.7%) – the lowest rate since November 2.

It should be noted that since December 20, Gazprom has not booked the capacity of the Yamal – Europe gas pipeline for the transit of fuel through Poland. Gazprom explained that it does not use this route, as a number of customers, in particular from France and Germany, have already fully selected all of their annual contract volumes. The company also called the accusations against it about restricting exports to Europe a lie and is ready to supply additional volumes of gas under long-term contracts and is cheaper than the spot.

We add that, according to Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Alexander Novak, the main reasons for the rise in gas prices in the European Union, which in the past year exceeded $ 2 thousand per thousand cubic meters, are the rejection of long-term contracts in favor of spot contracts, long-term investments in the industry and a fall own production of “blue fuel” in Europe.
